A risky play in these times, but a production that manages the balance between the words and the sentiments very carefully. Evan Buliung is a strong Petrucchio and has great chemistry with Kate. He suffered with her, thereby reducing the brutality.
The limp was unnecessary and interfered with the feeling of the play.
What is it with unnecessary bits of business this year? The limp was distracting and unnecessary. Did Hinton not think Poole could carry the role without this?
ReplyDeleteHinton also doesn't know how to use the Festival stage - it's a thrust stage for a reason!
However, I liked the production. Poole and Buliug were excellent and the production didn't wimp out on the text but still managed to make it work for our sensibilities.
If Hinton has learned from his mistakes, I'm willing to give him another chance. (Martha Henry has been a rather good director, despite her pathetic Richard III. People can grow.)
