Not your usual piece of theatre. But fascinating and funny, once you get caught up in the rythmn and begin to see what is happening.
As parents, we could really appreciate the adolescent form - the rapid mood swings, the constant trial, the miserable linguistic habits, the sense that no one understands and nothing will ever be right.
This is a co-production with a Belgian theatre group Ontroerend Goed and Kopergietery - not something we are likely to run across and one of the great benefits of Worldstage at Harbourfront.
Yes, certainly different - and that's a good thing. It was interesting watching the variations on a theme played out and the adolescent issues did ring a bell. However, someone in the audience mentioned seeing it in Edinburgh with 14-year-olds, and that would have certainly have rung more true - the cast would BE in the throws of puberty, rather than acting it. These performers were clearly older. One frightening thought: were these in fact the 14-year-olds from Edinburgh still acting out the same scene? Trapped in puberty hell!
ReplyDeleteLike the Dove women's show this is one that cannot be acted but has to be lived by the participants. If it is going to have a continued existence they need to develop a templet, again like the Dove production, and then let each production's cast of 14-year-olds fill it with their own lives.
