Soulpepper excells at moody plays, so Ibsen is right up their alley. This production of Ghosts is no exception - it was just excellent. The acting and direction made sure that the dialogue and plot were clear. Nothing prevented you from hearing and paying attention to every word. the costumes, set and lighting provided the mood.
Nancy Palk was superb as Mrs Alving; Diego Matamoros and Joseph Zeigler were equally good.
This was a Morris Panych adaptation, so I must give him some credit, too.
I'm not super-keen on Ibsen; like Shaw his topics don't age well (both may get better with a bit more distance), and Ibsen does not offer Shaw's wit.
ReplyDeleteThis was a strong production, though and the various themes were clearer than the last version we saw (Shaw? Stratford?). Zeigler's part (the Pastor) is definitely the one to have; he could make anti-clerics of us all! But all the actors were good as were the production and set.
So, despite the rain and gloom, a worthwhile evening of theatre.
