Started out funny, but quickly became repetitive. "Trite" is the word I used to describe it.
This is a play that should be cut back to 90 minutes and performed with no intermission, so the audience can't leave (as we did).
I don't understand how this play has been around in this form for so long. The interaction between the boy and his granny is the core of the play and, initially at least this is strong - funny but with some emotional depth. The parents in India, in contrast, appear as caricatures and just distract from the main story. They would have been much better handled through the eyes, and comments, of the boy and his granny and never actually appear. Then the play could have been shortened and tightened. This felt like an early read-through. Somebody should have done the author the kindness of some tough criticism.
